SUGGESTED ATTIRE
DON'T wear dance shoes outside! Put names in dance shoes!
Ballet (girls): Any color or style leotard, pink tights, pink soft ballet slippers. Beginner 2 and above should have split-soled better-brand slippers (like Fuzi, Bloch, Capezio, etc.). Hair should be tied back; hair REQUIRED in a bun or similar for Beg. 4, Intermediate, Advanced. Pointe shoes will be discussed when needed - have a teacher check fit of pointe shoes BEFORE sewing on ribbons.
Ballet (boys): Any color leotard, black or white tights, dance belt, black or white soft ballet slippers OR (for young boys or beginners) SHORTS with elastic waist, T-shirt, socks, ballet slippers.
Creative Dance/Pre-Ballet: Just like Ballet above.
Jazz: Hair pulled back. Any color or style of leotard, tights, bike-a-tard, unitard, crop-tops with bike shorts, leggings, jazz pants; must be flexible and show body lines. NO jeans, jeans shorts, school clothes, sweat pants. No big t-shirt cover-ups. Jazz shoes, black, inexpensive ones OK for beginner kids; 2nd year and up and teens/adults should have split-soled, better oxfords.
Hip-Hop: Clothing you can dance in. Dance sneakers/athletic shoes are OK, but you must have a pair that you wear ONLY in class. CANNOT BE STREET SHOES.
Tap: Just like Jazz except black Tap shoes. Inexpensive patent leather OK for beginner kids - NO Velcro closures. 2nd year and up and teens/adults should have better-brand (Fuzi, Capezio, Bloch, etc.) oxford-style shoes. Techno-taps are good.
Salsa: Clothing you can dance in. Shoes must enable you to spin on one foot – dress shoes that have been cleaned/not worn directly from the street, ballet shoes, jazz shoes, or character shoes.
Flamenco: Dancewear and Flamenco shoes.
Stretch & Strengthen: workout/dancewear, no shoes required. Bring your own mat.
WHERE TO PURCHASE DANCE ATTIRE:
Try Payless for shoes sometimes, various department stores for leotards. (Please don't buy "toy" ballet shoes with stretch nylon uppers.)
